Devotion: A Sense of Place

This is a photography project highlighting contrasting styles of gothic church features in a focussed area of historic Bristol. Warm autumn days provided a special quality of light that enabled a range of tones in the end result. The camera was an ideal medium for this as not only have the ability to capture realistic detail, it is also possible to experiment with focus and angles in creative ways as well. With a monochromatic colour palette, these works are visual observations that present my own journey through each place.

Ultimately, there is so much to appreciate when looking closely at features normally viewed from a distance which will hopefully contribute to the viewer’s admiration of romantic architecture.

Luminary: Identity

Luminary is a body of photographic work that focuses on artificial light set against the backdrop of darkness found around the city of Bristol. A pro-mist lens filter was used to diffuse these light sources and cause them to burst before being blurred yet further in post-production. This was to create an abstract and hyperrealist aesthetic and leave viewers disoriented. It is a common idea that light represents safety whilst traversing dark places, but my pictures suggest that it is not always a guiding friend.

On a personal level, these photographs are meant to act as visual representations of my own feelings, particularly of loneliness and solitude. This tool enables me to freely communicate my experiences in life.

Sufficiency: Enclosures and Boundaries

Sufficiency is a collection of photography that showcases my exploration of multiple subjects such as long-exposure photography and lumen printing. With the support of a tripod, a neutral-density filter and occasionally the environment I was situated at, I was able to create digital photographs of hazy, reflective water throughout the summer twilight hours to evenings; it’s locations ranging from Bristol all the way to Cheddar. I have used bromide paper and plant matter that slowly decomposed with the lumen printing side of the project, creating a disgusting yet beautiful outcome of flowers with golden tints reminiscent of bloodstains. The specimens were collected from each location.

There were no thoughts behind the meaning of this work, I was merely interested of what I’m capable of doing with this medium, and so I can only hope that this curiosity can reflect towards the viewer. Sufficiency means to be adequate which I am directing towards the quality of the photos, it is enough; however, there is also the idea of most of the highlighted bodies of water being protected and treated because it’s quality and quantity is essential.

Traction: Photo Essay

I have experienced a day’s rush of tourism. Despite that, I’m sure the old village site will remain unchanging for a long while. I focused on taking portraiture with the subject being fully aware of it, struggling to gain confidence in simple socialising.

The beaches and tourist attractions of Shanklin, Isle of Wight have been captured in a colour palette of golds, silvers and blues. This work highlights the working residents and their repeating contribution to sales, accommodation and hospitality.

Discrepancy: Photography and The Archive

A sequence of images that have been heavily, digitally altered to stray away from the original material as much as possible. It was initially an orphaned archive, abandoned and left in the waste with no desire for it to be returned. A selection of photos have fallen into my hands and I had the intention of being destructive. The family has been abstracted, obscured and melted - they are lost much like their stories.

This project was another experiment, breaking the rules of typical scanning and digitisation to create horrific yet fascinating fine art pieces. Some are fragmented, some burn like stars, all meant to strain the concentrating eye. Being unfamiliar with this family, this is my attempt to express my disconnection to the nostalgia and sentimentalities.
